Fatality: Metal as hell (chapter 1)
16/01/09 || Lord K Philipson
I had to start off 2009 by reviewing shit-masters Breakdown so it’s just natural that I take on another crap band for my second review this year, right? I think I said this before ( I like to repeat myself, so sue me)… In the late 80’s and early 90’s I really had a hard, hard hard-on for thrash metal. I even saw the comical side of it (Among other things, Anthrax had their “NOT” thing going and shorts on stage – you know the deal) as something good. I enjoyed it all and I lived for thrash metal and everything that came with it. There is a thrash revival now and it’s more and more evident to me that I don’t care about new thrash metal for shit. And as mentioned, it’s been a long time since I actually enjoyed humour in my metal. Leave the comedy for the comedians and concentrate on creating music if you are in a band. Metal is not supposed to be funny. Fuck funny, give me “Master of puppets” or “Reign in blood”. Is there anything funny about those albums? Fuck no. Fuck, fuck no.
And with that out of my system, let’s dive into the (ofcourse) comical thrash band that is, you guessed it, Fatality. It’s not like they are the worst band I ever heard – far from it actually (have in mind I have been forced to deal with bands such as Xasthur) – but they sport a terrible production (another example of a band who probably did this on purpose to get that old-school, crappy feeling). The main problem is the fact that I find no amusement whatsoever in what they are creating on “Metal as hell”. Shitty riffs in symbiosis with shitty vocals and shitty song arrangements ain’t fucken cutting it in the home of your fave guy, me.
You hear influences from all those 4000 (fun) thrash bands that never made it in any way in this world, whereas most of them you never even heard about (I heard them all though, that’s why I can make this reference). And you want me to like this? You actually thought that I would like this? Did anyone enjoy this so far?
Right, I didn’t think so.
From their website: “This year we have completed our first album “Metal As Hell!”
which was a hell of a lot of work!! We hope that you have eargasms when you
listen to this fuel injection of metal!”
Yeah, I think that 3 non-existing eargasm’s out of 10 will do this justice. And before I leave, lemme hand out some words of infinite wisdom, originally uttered by Leif Edling:
“Please, let chapter 2 stay unwritten.”
